Shalini Misra Design has completed an extensive interior renovation of a Bombardier Global XRS, transforming the aircraft into a highly personalised airborne residence defined by bespoke craftsmanship and layered cultural references.

The project began with a clear directive from the client: the aircraft should not feel like a means of transport, but rather a private home in the sky. Tasked with reimagining the 14-seat Global XRS, Shalini Misra Design was given the creative freedom to reinterpret private aviation interiors through the same residential design principles the studio applies to private homes.

Rather than focusing solely on materials or finishes, the brief emphasised deeper personalisation, incorporating spatial planning, tactile experience and cultural identity throughout the cabin. The design embeds the client’s heritage and global outlook in subtle, considered ways, avoiding superficial references and ensuring every element feels authentic and individual.

Craftsmanship formed a central pillar of the project. Every detail was produced to order in collaboration with specialist artisans and suppliers capable of meeting both the design vision and the stringent certification standards required for aviation interiors. Upholstery, wall treatments, joinery and surface finishes were all custom developed, ensuring the environment was tailored entirely to the client’s lifestyle and preferences.

Among the most distinctive elements is a bespoke wallpaper created by de Gournay. The design features hand painted scenes inspired by 19th century British expeditions to India, carefully adapted for the curved architecture of the aircraft cabin. Each panel had to be composed around seating, screens and structural forms, requiring months of coordination to achieve a seamless result.

Additional collaborations include custom carpets developed with Jaipur Rugs, scaled and tested specifically for aviation conditions. Other elements required equally precise technical solutions, including marquetry surfaces using specialised adhesives suitable for high altitude performance, upholstery stitching adapted to the curves of aircraft seating and embroidered leather bathroom panels certified for flight.

The cabin layout follows a residential logic, shaped around how the client moves through the space during work, dining and rest. According to Shalini Misra Design, the project demonstrates how the values of bespoke residential design can be translated into one of the most technically demanding environments, resulting in an aircraft interior defined not by luxury alone but by deeply personal design thinking.
