Set along the rugged coastline of Portland, Maine, this 19th-century family residence underwent a meticulous three-year transformation led by Todd Anthony Design. The project sought to honor the home’s historic character while introducing a refined architectural language suited to contemporary coastal living.

The renovation encompassed a complete reimagining of both the residence and its surrounding grounds. A newly conceived landscape and hardscape plan establishes a graceful dialogue between the house and the natural setting, culminating in a dramatic true infinity pool overlooking the property’s coastal horizon. Integrated seamlessly into the design, a spa hot tub offers a tranquil retreat while reinforcing the project’s emphasis on leisure and understated luxury.

At the front elevation, the estate was thoughtfully expanded with the addition of a carriage house, designed to complement the architectural heritage of the original structure. The arrival sequence was equally elevated through the installation of a heated Belgian block driveway and courtyard—an elegant yet practical feature that ensures year-round accessibility while reinforcing the property’s timeless New England character.

The result is a residence that balances preservation and innovation: a historic coastal home renewed with clarity, craftsmanship, and a sense of enduring sophistication.
