The Sheborne by Proper Hotels

The redesign of the historic Art Deco Shelborne Hotel sought to honour its iconic glamour while introducing a renewed identity aligned with the Proper Hotel aesthetic. Led by the interior design firm ADC & Tuneu, the project encompassed a comprehensive refurbishment of the entire property, including guestrooms, penthouse and suites, public spaces, restaurants and bars, wellness facilities, and the exterior terraces, gardens, and pool. The result is a cohesive and elevated experience across all aspects of the hotel.

Central to the vision was a sensitive reimagining rather than a straightforward restoration. The design carefully preserves the building’s architectural heritage while introducing a contemporary language that enhances its relevance for a modern audience. Originally designed in 1940 by Igor Polevitzky and Thomas Triplett Russell, the Shelborne possesses a strong Art Deco identity, which ADC & Tuneu have respected and reinterpreted through a refined, modern lens.

A key objective was to reconnect the hotel with its local context. This was achieved through collaboration with local artists, makers, and designers, embedding authenticity and cultural richness throughout the interiors. Each space has been thoughtfully curated to reflect a strong sense of place and purpose.

The design narrative also draws inspiration from Miami’s lesser-explored cultural history, particularly the expressive and hedonistic spirit of the 1970s. This influence is reflected in the layered use of texture, materiality, and atmosphere, offering a fresh alternative to more conventional references.

The result is a harmonious dialogue between past and present, where heritage and innovation coexist to create a timeless yet forward-looking destination.
