Al Sharqi House

Located beneath Muttrah Fort and adjacent to the historic port of Muttrah, Alsharqi House is a 130-year-old heritage restoration and adaptive reuse project undertaken by Al Hajar Mountains Hotels and Resorts. Originally built by the Al Zakwani family, the property played an important role within Muttrah’s trading district before later serving as accommodation for government officials. In 2022, the company was awarded the project to restore and transform the building into a boutique hospitality destination comprising four guest rooms, Mesa Restaurant and Mezrad Gift Shop.

Upon taking possession, Al Hajar Mountains Hotels and Resorts found the building in a severely deteriorated condition, with significant structural failures including collapsed roof and floor slabs. Extensive investigations revealed traditional construction methods, including sandalwood beams, bamboo sticks and palm fronds. A comprehensive structural assessment informed a conservation-led restoration strategy, with cracks carefully repaired and a concealed steel support system introduced to ensure long-term stability while preserving the building’s historic fabric.

The project focused on retaining the property’s authentic character. Original wooden windows, traditional railings, architectural details and the historic well were restored wherever possible. Modern hospitality requirements, including ensuite bathrooms and a VRF air-conditioning system, were sensitively integrated to provide guest comfort while minimising visual impact on the heritage interiors.
