Bishop Design LLC conceived Koo Madame as a high-end Chinese dining destination that reinterprets the glamour and cultural richness of 1920s Shanghai through a contemporary lens. Located within Rosewood Doha, the restaurant draws inspiration from Shanghai’s historic French Concession, blending Sino-French influences with refined Art Deco sensibilities. The project was envisioned as more than a restaurant, creating an immersive journey where cultural storytelling, luxury and hospitality functionality combine to deliver a timeless dining experience.

At the heart of the design is a central dining space that serves as the anchor of the guest experience. Connected to the animation and theatrics of the open kitchen, this vibrant hub evokes the energy of a Shanghai street market through carefully choreographed sensory experiences. In contrast, intimate pockets throughout the restaurant provide quieter environments for conversation and reflection. Seating arrangements were intentionally diversified to accommodate intimate meals, social gatherings, hosted events and private dining experiences, all connected through a carefully planned spatial sequence.

Bishop Design LLC used strategic zoning, architectural framing devices, partition screens, wine displays and semi-private booths to create intimacy across the restaurant’s 81 internal and 19 outdoor covers. The private dining room was positioned at the furthest point of the layout to maximise exclusivity while maintaining visual and material continuity. Every transition was carefully considered, allowing guests to experience the space differently depending on their route and occasion.

Intricate detailing defines the project, from bespoke joinery and custom furniture to decorative lighting and screening elements. Warm timber tones, antiqued bronze finishes, marble surfaces, textured fabrics, silk-inspired wall coverings, fluted glazing and distressed finishes establish a richly layered material palette. Enhanced by bespoke murals inspired by Shanghai’s leafy boulevards, the result is a cinematic and enduring hospitality destination that has become a benchmark concept for the Rosewood Group.
