Blue Lantern Studios approached Lazy Betty with a people-first design philosophy, creating a warm, nature-inspired restaurant where art, materiality and biophilia come together to support an intimate and memorable dining experience. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, the studio considered how the environment could influence the emotions and wellbeing of both guests and staff.

Informed by the firm’s Science in Design certification, the interior integrates natural light, colour, texture, pattern, artwork and connections to nature in a considered and understated way. Terracotta walls, teal velvet banquettes, heart pine flooring, natural stone, brass accents and abundant greenery establish a rich, welcoming palette inspired by the natural world, while quieter areas provide visual balance.

The spatial experience evolves throughout the restaurant. A lively, inviting bar transitions into increasingly intimate dining areas, while repurposed barn doors introduce the Chef’s Dining Room. A salvaged steel-and-glass window creates a framed connection between the main dining area and wine display, encouraging moments of discovery and visual connection.

Sustainability was incorporated naturally through the reuse of existing materials, including refinished original heart pine flooring, repurposed stone and retained architectural elements. Local artwork further strengthens the restaurant’s identity, with Christina Kwan’s custom lighting and mural and Jenifer Thoem’s sculptural birds bringing a distinctly Atlanta character to the space.

As a Michelin-starred destination, Lazy Betty required an interior with a strong identity that would never compete with the cuisine. Blue Lantern Studios therefore prioritised atmosphere over spectacle, carefully balancing stimulation with calm. The resulting environment welcomes guests, encourages exploration and ultimately allows Chef Hsu’s cuisine and the shared dining experience to remain at the centre.
