Every project at Chris Shao Studio begins with thorough research, where historical, social, and cultural dimensions form the foundation of each concept. For the Ortensia restaurant project, the studio drew inspiration from the historic Shikumen architecture of its Shanghai location, the establishment’s Parisian roots, Michelin-recognized cuisine, and Japanese sophistication. Situated in the Zhangyuan district, the design embraces the city’s architectural legacy while crafting a balanced and immersive dining experience.
The restaurant’s namesake, “Hortensia,” meaning hydrangea, serves as the central design motif. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by hydrangeas nestled on a Shikumen patio. This floral theme continues inside, where the entrance desk resembles a budding skeleton and open petals adorn a nearby wall. A dramatic floral installation at the restaurant’s center, doubling as a server’s station, further reinforces this motif. Subtle details, such as metal flowers embellishing reimagined French panels, seamlessly complement the Shikumen structure.
