With the architectural shell of the property established, the clients turned to interior designer Ryoko Ogoshi to craft a warm, sophisticated interior that responded directly to the home’s dramatic coastal setting. From the earliest design stages, Ryoko reshaped the proposed interior architecture to avoid the sterile white minimalism originally suggested, instead creating spaces that feel grounded, tactile, and deeply connected to the landscape. The design concept draws inspiration from the ocean, rocky hillside, and shifting natural light -elements that became especially meaningful during the pandemic, when nature and calmness gained renewed importance.

The clients wanted a retreat that allowed them to immerse themselves in the environment, and Ryoko’s interior architecture frames the views at every opportunity. Their Japanese‑American heritage subtly informs the aesthetic, introducing a quiet fusion of East‑West sensibilities through proportion, material restraint, and crafted details. The home also reflects their love of outdoor living, with spaces designed to transition seamlessly between relaxation, contemplation, and time spent in nature.

The double‑height main living space is the heart of the interior, designed to amplify the spectacular ocean views through a sunken seating area that draws the eye outward. The palette – blues, yellows, and greys – echoes the sea, sun, and earth, forming a cohesive thread throughout the home.

Materials were selected for warmth and tactility, ensuring the interiors feel cocooning rather than stark. Bespoke commissioned artworks and a custom rug reinforce the natural narrative, adding subtle layers of colour and texture.

The bedrooms continue this restrained approach: muted tones, soft textures, and minimal decoration keep focus on the horizon beyond. The master suite is bright and serene, while the guest room incorporates a Japanese bridal‑colour wallpaper that holds personal meaning for the clients. The bold atrium and surrounding open‑plan spaces shift beautifully with the light—airy and expansive during the day, then soft and intimate at night through carefully considered indirect lighting. From the second‑floor gallery, the interplay of architecture, interior detailing, and ocean views creates a striking moment of pause.

The interiors succeed because they are entirely shaped around the views, with Ryoko’s spatial planning ensuring every key room captures the changing landscape and seascape. The calm, warm material palette complements the dramatic exterior rather than competing with it, offering a luxurious refuge during stormy weather or evenings after long days outdoors.

Built on a rocky hillside overlooking the Pacific, the project evolved during the pandemic, prompting both designer and clients to adopt slower, more environmentally conscious ways of living and working. The clients became deeply engaged with supporting local artisans, builders, and craftspeople, commissioning bespoke furniture, rugs, and artworks that enrich the home’s identity.

Their retreat now serves not only as a personal sanctuary but as a model for thoughtful, nature‑led living – one that values craftsmanship, environmental sensitivity, and connection to the wider community. The result is an interior that feels grounded, restorative, and intimately tied to the landscape it inhabits.
