Elizabeth Metcalfe Interiors were enlisted to design a custom residence for a prominent lawyer and an entrepreneurial wife for their young family. Once the clients found the perfect lot to build on, situated in close proximity to beautiful Lake Ontario, they commissioned a well-known architect and builder to create their dream home. Working closely with the architect, EM Design perfected the homes layout to include the clients brief that bespoke millwork detailing, distinctive lighting and luxurious furnishings were integrated in the designs of the entrance, dining room, kitchen, great room and master suite. The residence had to feel luxurious and sophisticated for entertaining yet modern and comfortable for their young family. The entertaining areas had to have a distinguishing presence while the family and private areas had to be comfortable and intimate which were key to creating their ideal family home. Running seamlessly through the home are subtle references that repeat an undeniable sense of calm, harmony and balance.

The transitions from light to dark from the sophisticated entrance to the light filled kitchen and breakfast area, creates a relaxed and comfortable aesthetic that runs throughout the home. The entrance is wrapped entirely in custom rift-cut oak panelling in a beautiful warm-grey hue that creates an unexpected and intimate entrance. The chic, almost hotel-like feeling that this creates is repeated in the dining room where the same oak panelling is used on the modern fireplace, combined with bronze etched mirror. A low-profile plaster ceiling design highlights the custom white glass chandelier.

A carefully considered design expresses the needs of a family and provides a respite, a place to feel completely at home, to enjoy and to share. This home was made for a family that would occupy it with their daughters, their dog and their friends and family. We have achieved this through the décor – a mix of furnishings that spoke to the clients’ life-style were selected and combined with interior detailing with high-design impact. It was EM Design’s honour to play an integral part of this family’s journey to build a beautiful home. Beauty is a result of scale, proportion, colour, form, repetition, harmony and balance. It’s fundamentally the core principle of all great design. This residence embodies a quiet beauty that evokes a feeling of warmth, grace and authenticity.
