Project Name: New York City Duplex

Location: New York

Date Completed: August 2016

Interior Designer: Rachel Laxer

Architect: Mary Burnam

This project involved the redesign of a family home in New York. Rachel Laxer Interiors designed the property perfectly for the clients, the home was filled with fine art and furnishings, yet equally comfortable and relaxed for teenage children and pets. After 12 years of living in London, a family headed back to New York for good. They wanted an apartment in the city that had the space of a house and felt like home. The space had the classic English Georgian proportions and this was the perfect space to create a spacious family home. Functional art was absolutely key to creating a space that worked for this family.

Rachel Laxer used iconic Italian designers like Gio Ponti together with contemporary edgier, modern artists to create a space that felt curated just for this family. The designers’ favourite aspect of the project is the artist collaboration for functional art. There were many challenges involved in this project and specialists were needed for glassblowing, straw marquetry, vintage furnishings, joinery, restoration, and special plaster.

Rachel Laxer Interiors believe the design works so well because of the amazing team that were involved in the project, there was great communication between the architects, contractors, interior designers, and the clients too. The designers believe that the key to any successful project is communication between all involved parties. The design integrates perfectly into its wider environment as it is based in such an international city, the design reflects this and includes the art and furnishings of a well-travelled family.
