The client wanted to combine her antique furniture, including a Japanese lacquered chest, from which the designers’ inspiration was taken, with the contemporary look of the new, modern development. The client was determined to create a contemporary home for her London Pied de Terre despite the fact that she had antique furniture from her family home and was reluctant to dispose of this. Kelling Designs were lucky that their client was happy to be bold and brave with her choice of colour, setting out her stall in the entrance hall, painted in vibrant orange. It was the start of a bold blue and orange adventure throughout the flat.

The reception room had in one part of the room a double height ceiling – this enabled us to create a bespoke joinery unit which helped to make the height difference in the room rather more seamless. Shelving was created to size for her special porcelain collection. While the client wanted the master bedroom to be peaceful and relaxing it needed to maintain its contemporary feel and follow the design of the rest of the flat, to this end De Gournay coloured the wallpaper for us and Kelling Designs used softer orange and gold tones.

With three young children Kelling Designs created a light spacious bedroom with triple bunks – each with its own reading light and books shelves colour coordinated to match the Christopher Farr curtains. In the guest bedrooms the designers reused the antique beds setting them off against the blue grasscloth wallpaper, and smart cream curtains with a contrast trim. The flat combines a contemporary twist with all the comfort of the antique Howard sofas. It provides a home for her family but a sophisticated space for entertaining and relaxing.

Kelling Designs’ favourite aspect of the project was their client – they have stated that she was a joy to work with and open to a range of different interpretations and ideas. The designers also feel that there are three features which highlight the success of the design, the first is the colour scheme, with blues and oranges flowing throughout the whole property. The second is space, no area is wasted and there is enough space to sleep seven people. The third feature is light, double height windows and ceilings allow maximum light to compliment the design.
