Captivated by the sea, blessed by the sun, the homeowner, a restaurant owner in Boston and Nantucket, is the definition of a “Saltie Girl” with fond memories of cooking with her family from the bountiful waters and land of the island 30 miles offshore of Massachusetts known as Nantucket. From spending summers on a sailboat with her father to working at a candy shop located in the space she would later buy for her island restaurant, Nantucket has always been a magical place for her. She and her husband bought a plot of land on the island just steps from the quintessential cobblestones of downtown and handpicked an award-winning team to build her dream house in 2017.

Sea Myst, the name given to the house, lives up to the design mandate: create a house in which a blended family and their friends can gather in luxurious comfort. The gourmet kitchen needed to meet restaurant standards to allow for beautiful, delectable spreads of food and drink. On a warm summer evening, the house is abuzz with family – and the adopted family some would call her restaurant staff – cooking scallops they harvested that day or fresh produce purchased at the local farm, sharing stories of their most coveted travels, and admiring the view of the salty, salty sea from the Widow’s Walk perch on the rooftop. The interior of the house is a symphony of neutrals whose luscious textures excite the senses.

Added unexpected elements, like the champagne cork stools in the bar area or the African Juju tribal hat, bring a sense of whimsy and visual interest. The ample indoor and outdoor living areas allow for seamless entertaining of groups large and small with a living room that opens onto the adjacent dining terrace and pool beyond. The large living room was divided into three distinct spaces to allow for entertaining on different scales, so that when not entertaining the family could enjoy cozy evenings by the fire. The house is filled with furnishings and objects that give nod to its nautical location. This special home contains two master suites for ultimate guest comfort, in addition to four other generous guest suites. The large open floor plan maximizes entertaining space and is ready to welcome groups small and large.

Kathleen Hay Design ‘s favourite aspect of the project is the sense of whimsy in the furnishings combined with the drama of the living areas and kitchen makes for an unexpected impact. The sophisticated, yet relaxed quality of the interior is a welcome and artful balance of serious and playful.  The house exudes a hip and beachy vibe and “no fuss” attitude. The combined indoor/outdoor shower in the master bath is the piece de resistance!
