1.61 London were tasked with designing the communal spaces which included a cinema, gym and lobby space as well as the apartments and marketing suite café for a new development. The brief for the scheme was to stand out from the rest of the new developments in London with edgy and trendy designs that were luxurious and befitting of the Southwark area.

The building is steeped in history and it was important that 1.61 London paid tribute to this in a sympathetic manner. From this background the designer’s slogan was ‘traditionally different’ which can be seen throughout the designs of the spaces – blending the traditional with the contemporary. The developers wanted 1.61 London to create spaces that would add value to the modern living experience and were a real extension of individual apartments whilst keeping the heritage of the location alive to create a space that would stand the test of time.

Unique design elements flow throughout the development, with dark Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic features across the fixtures and furnishings which contrast with the naturally light living space to create a true bohemian style that still gives a luxurious and homely atmosphere.

Communal areas comprising of the lobby, workspace, community space, cinema, café and gym areas have been designed and furnished slightly different to the apartments with a moody darker theme to enhance the industrial feel of the building and create a really unique design style. Striking industrial features like vertical metal dividing sections and distressed finishes including bespoke panelling with cluster art and asymmetric wall lights, with upholstery mixed with patterned fabrics

1.61 London have stated that Brigade Court has been an exciting project for them to be part of, taking them into new fields of creativity; trying to balance modern vs. traditional to create a quirky luxurious and industrial end product. The blend of styles that the designers have incorporated create a true bohemian luxe style which they believe is very unique for a new development in London.
