Project Name: Ashley Jay Kitchens: Modern Industrial Kitchen

Location: Ewhurst, Surrey Hills

Date Completed: March 2019

Interior Designer: Ashley Jay Ltd

A contemporary open-plan kitchen, mixing textures and materials to create an industrial chic design that opens out to views of the Surrey Hills.

The clients wanted an eclectic design which utilised a variety of materials and textures to build a unique industrial style. The kitchen needed to nestle in the architecture of their distinctive new-build home which was designed to open at the rear to expansive views of the Surrey Hills. The layout was designed to create an intimate, warm feel with clear storage zones and an ergonomic flow for an active family.

Making the most of an unusual space at the centre of the home, the team created a feature island with asymmetrical seating. This was a response to the client’s need for island working space and an integrated area for family breakfast seating. It also mirrors the adjacent staircase, wraps into the negative space left by the staircase, and creates a direct sight line to the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The darker cabinetry and floor-to-ceiling design envelops this central zone with its lower ceiling, drawing the eye towards the mid-height sink run of units (built specially and clad in the worktop material) and beyond towards the staircases which run up and down to the double height living space with its continuous views.

A key part of the brief was to ensure every element reflected the clients’ tastes, personal styles and lifestyles. Slate veneered doors were coupled with copper oak book-end grain matched doors and cladding to create warmth and drama. The units were topped with Dekton Trilium worktops and splash backs which evokes distressed metal and ties in beautifully with the striking Buster & Punch smoked bronze handles and exposed pendant lights.

Lastly, but most importantly, the clients wanted storage, worktop space and appliances which were practical and could handle the heavy usage of their family life. As keen cooks and coffee enthusiasts Ashley Jay Kitchens supplied a bank of Miele steam, multi functional combination ovens, warming drawers and a coffee centre. This was framed by double larders and a bespoke pocket-door drinks cabinet.
