Located on the outskirts of Bristol, Fawn Interiors were asked to create a luxurious contemporary living room. The clients wanted this space to be enjoyed everyday by the family but equally a place that would suit entertaining and large family gatherings. The interior was to be chic, elegant and glamorous yet still practical with cosy spaces.

The property was built in 1990 by the previous owners and was of an acquired taste. It had some quirky features and a sense of grandeur which my clients fell in love with but was in need of modernisation. The lounge led straight off the entrance hall so creating an initial wow factor was extremely important. It was large in size (8m x 8.5m) and some of the original features included Spanish floor tiles, an overbearing fireplace, dated wall recesses and a coffered ceiling.

The client loved the size of this room but the current layout did not work for their family, so it was Fawn Interiors’ job to make this into a timeless, contemporary, multifunctional space with the feeling of intimacy if possible. The designer and client decided together what features were to be removed and what Fawn Interiors could work with. The marble fireplace was to go, and it was decided to keep the coffered ceiling as this gave a sense of opulence and drama when lit correctly.

The clients were specific about wanting this room to have neutral base with some colour which would give them the opportunity to swap in different coloured smaller items in the future. Fawn Interiors knew that they had to be creative with the layout. Whilst looking at the architecture, it was evident there was a strong sense of symmetry, so they worked with this to create a harmonious feeling of balance.

The success of this room lies in its casual but elegant approach suiting the needs of the family. The design scheme incorporates lots of different seating that can be enjoyed whatever the occasion. All the furniture was upholstered in complementing fabrics and all were based on a timeless, clean styles so they read well together. The large sofa provides informal seating where the whole family can relax and watch the TV. To balance out this sofa the four armchairs were then introduced around a bespoke pouffe that has been upholstered in the same fabric as the large sofa. This provides some formal seating that could be used for entertaining or relaxing in front of the fire. All of these pieces are then all brought together by a large rug encapsulating the seating areas, making the space feel warm and intimate.
