After a decade of living abroad, Hali MacDonald Interiors’ personal project is a home that reflects herself and her young family. The aim for this design was never to be an ostentatious, but rather one with casual elegance and beauty in the details – where the more you look at it, the more you appreciate it. With the understanding that design, colour, and lighting all have tremendous ability to impact our moods and everyday life, Hali holds the belief that having a comforting and beautiful home to call your own is of utmost importance.

The home was the start of Hali’s business, and her main goal with this design was to create comfort and approachability while still feeling layered and collected. It works well through her blending of styles and personalities throughout the house. Mixing new pieces with antiques, traditional with modern, bright whites with colours, pattern and texture – each are combined in a way that complements the other without feeling overbearing. One of the designers favourite aspects is that each room has its own personality, but all spaces still blend seamlessly together. Hali MacDonald Interiors chose to walk the line between styles to make these spaces feel special and more interesting to the eye.

Hali has a strong appreciation for antiques and so wanted her home to feel as if it had been there for quite some time. Though the home is a new build, she was determined to give the property the warmth that she feels within older homes. The colours and materials are all earthy tones, and the materials that were sourced such as stone, cedar, copper, and brick were chosen for how well they age. Talented artisans were used throughout the home, including carpenters that worked on creating the architectural staircase, and a talented metal smith that fabricated the custom blackened steel and brass range hood, plaster crown moldings and vent covers with impeccable attention to detail.  The finished product gives an old world feel with modern day practicality, blending antiques and traditional elements with clean lines.

As a lover of the outdoors, Hali MacDonald Interiors draws a lot of inspiration from nature and elements in their natural state. Throughout the build and design process Hali remained aware of the impact on the environment as well as the impact that different selected products would have when living in the home. Products were locally sourced possible and chose materials and fabrics that had minimal off-gassing.
