The Pemberton Heights remodel is a full renovation of a historic property in the Pemberton Heights neighbourhood of Austin, TX. After a failed first renovation, the client of this home hired Urbane Design to correct past contractor mistakes and breathe new life into their 100-year-old home. The brief was to completely gut and redesign bathrooms, along with redesigning the kitchen, primary bedroom, entryway and laundry room.

Urbane Design were instructed to keep the bespoke parts of the home, like the exterior (which cannot legally be changed due to the homes’ historic qualification), while updating other elements. The challenge for the designers was to protect the old while blending with the new. The client wanted a functional layout of their home for their growing family of three with classic meets modern finishes.

The designers’ favourite aspect of the home was the original hardwood floors that were preserved and sanded to a natural finish. They were completely imperfect and that is why they work so well. A skilled, high end carpenter was required to build the custom cabinetry that was incorporated through the project. The vent hood in the kitchen was 100% custom made and installed on-site. The designers and the general contractor needed to balance the delicate line of preserving as much of the home as they could while still performing a full renovation.

Urbane Design tried to keep as many of the homes’ original features as possible in order to maintain its’ integrity and eliminate as much waste as possible. The design is open, light and bright with a large square footage. It is perfect for our client to grow into. The primary suite is on the first floor, which is a unique attribute. It is a classic case of an older home that really needed new life breathed into it so that it will last for 100 more years.
