Timber Rock is an 8,000 square foot, seven-bedroom home sitting on a remote 60-acre property bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. The site has a 270-degree panorama with an uninterrupted view of Longs Peak which became a key aspect for the architecture of Timber Rock. Shepherd Resources Inc/AIA utilized glass curtainwalls, some as large as 14’-0 wide by 10’-0 tall, to make the most out of the surroundings and bring the stunning views inside.

The clients envisioned a humble design; with this in mind, Shepherd Resources Inc/AIA and Slifer Designs found inspiration in simple agrarian forms and grey barnwood siding, combined with modern materials such as an exposed steel skeleton, Corten steel panels, metal roofing and cut stone veneer create an earthy, grey palette blending with the mountain setting. Outdoor life is celebrated with patios and fireplaces, the living room features a fireplace from Fire Features Inc. of Brooklyn NY.

Upon entering the home, contemporary finishes give a modern, yet warm feel. Since entertaining is a priority for the clients, Shepherd Resources Inc/AIA created an open floor plan. The living room and pub sit on the western side of the great room with a true chef’s kitchen and dining room to the east. Centered in the great room is a steel fireplace suspended from the exposed structural steel roof trusses. All interior woodwork was created by a custom woodworking shop in Eagle, Colorado.

The design and architecture work so well because it complements the landscape and site, and blends in perfectly. Spaces move and flow dramatically with art and views, the retreat seamlessly blends with its surroundings and nestles into the site. The hybrid mix of tradition and contemporary materials and furniture is the icing on the cake.
