Designed with integrity from beginning to end, each Tania Johnson rug conveys a unique connection between inspiration, tradition & skill. The Venezia collection consists of six finely detailed rugs, each hand knotted in the finest Himalayan wool and Chinese silk by immensely skilled weavers in Nepal. The detailed designs are difficult to weave, with a single knot possibly containing a mix of both colour and fibre. Tania has worked closely with the same manufacturer since starting the business and the skilled artisans she works with in Nepal are at the core of everything she does.

Tania Johnson specialises in translating her textural photographs into unique and timeless rugs. Every design starts with a moment that inspires; the Venezia collection was inspired by a visit to Venice. Losing herself in the labyrinth of walls, Tania was inspired at every turn by the myriad of textural surfaces and the faded grandeur of crumbling palazzos. Venezia consists of six designs: Drift, Paved, Dapple, Facade, Palazzo and Imprint. One of Tania’s favourite aspects when designing this collection was coming across an old sketchbook book containing photos she had taken years ago. The book had been partially destroyed by damp and while initially upset, Tania then found amazing patterns created by the torn and dampened pages. The colours and textures that emerged reminded her of the textural surfaces in Venice and were the inspiration for the Dapple, Façade and Imprint designs.

The rugs in the Venezia collection combine all-over patterns which can sit easily in any space. Every rug is fully bespoke, and each one can be customised to work perfectly in any environment. The Tania Johnson team work closely with their clients to create the perfect rug for each project and Tania personally works on every design and weaving graph herself to ensure each one, regardless of size or colour, is an individual piece of art. Each one is hand knotted in varying combinations of wool and silk and while several standard colourways are offered, each rug is made to order and can be woven in any colour. The fibre content can also be changed, and the rugs can be produced in any size or shape.

Tania creates every weaving graph and specifies each colour used. This is then sent to the factory in Kathmandu and, following the graph by eye, each intricate rug is hand knotted by expert weavers. Every Tania Johnson rug is certified by GoodWeave, of which Tania has been a member of since forming the business and is a strong supporter of their work. From the start, she wanted to be sure her rugs were produced ethically and to help the communities involved in their production. She is proud to support the traditional craftsmanship of Tibetan weaving. Every rug is one of a kind and overseen by Tania at every step of the design process. Handmade with natural, renewable fibres, each luxurious rug is made to last generations.
