Katie Malik Studio were brought in for a full renovation of a 1930s detached house for a couple in their thirties, who had a very clear vision of what they desired for their interior scheme. The brief was simple – to achieve a Scandinavian style feel throughout – the clients communicated many of their wishes through inspirational images that they had discovered on social media.

One of the main challenges faced by Katie Malik Studio was the redesign of the kitchen. The clients wanted a new overall layout and colour scheme, they also wanted to remove the AGA and replace it with a more modern oven. Katie Malik Studio had to be careful with this new layout as the depth for an oven cabinet wasn’t ideal, as they had to fit the cooktop in the space of the old AGA. A Bora cooktop was proposed with an integrated extractor fan, which worked perfectly with the old chimney breast.

Since the clients were very clear and decisive about the style, the style and the colour scheme was a very natural choice. The design is well thought through and responds well to the clients’ brief – it’s functional and perfectly Scandinavian. Katie Malik Studio used natural materials (in both look and provenance) that tied in with the Scandinavian style, which was a very organic choice considering the goal of creating a Scandi comfort style for a young family. The designers used lots of natural wood (in both whitewashed oak and walnut), even wood effect tiles on the ground floor high traffic areas and opted for neutral colours paints from Benjamin Moore too.

The home is located in a village south of Cambridge. Little Abington is a popular commuter’s village which enables the homeowners to make the most of country life while being able to commute to work to the city of Cambridge. The home overlooks the paddocks and has a stunning mature garden which originally attracted the clients. Katie Malik Studio feel the serenity of the interior ties in very well with the peaceful surroundings.
