Designed with integrity from beginning to end, each rug from Tania Johnson Design conveys a unique connection between inspiration, tradition, and skill. Tania has always been particularly inspired by water, the way reflections on the ripples and waves constantly and randomly create new patterns. So, creating an entire collection around this theme was a complete joy for her. The Water collection consists of seven finely detailed rugs, each hand knotted in the finest Himalayan wool and Chinese silk.

Tania specialises in translating her textural photographs into unique and timeless rugs that are intricately hand knotted in wool and silk. 2022 is the ten-year anniversary of Tania Johnson Design’s bestselling Water collection and to celebrate, the company is launching a number of new colours and shapes throughout the year. Each rug in the Water collection is based on Tania’s photography capturing fleeting moments in time created by the movement of water. Translated into rugs, these unique images of light and reflections on water are hand knotted in silk and wool. The collection consists of seven designs: Flow, Rainstorm, Ripples, Splash, Waterlines, Wave and Whirl.

Water inherently evokes feelings of calmness and healing and the designer has found that her clients are drawn to the gentle, flowing designs in this collection. The simple, all-over pattern of Waterlines is particularly popular as it can sit so easily in any space. Every rug is fully bespoke for size, shape and colour. Each piece is made to order and can be woven in any colour – customisable to work perfectly in any environment. The fibre content can also be changed, and the rugs can be produced in any size or shape. Tania and her team work closely with their clients to create the perfect rug for each project and Tania personally works on every design and weaving graph herself to ensure each one, regardless of size or colour, is an individual piece of art.

For each rug, Tania personally creates every weaving graph and specifies each colour used. This is then sent to the factory in Kathmandu and, following the graph by eye, each intricate rug is painstakingly hand knotted by expert weavers. Every Tania Johnson rug is certified by GoodWeave which aims to eliminate child labour and to improve working conditions for adults. Tania has been a member of GoodWeave since forming the business and is a strong supporter of their work. From the start, she wanted to be sure her rugs were produced ethically and to help the communities involved in their production. Every rug is one of a kind and overseen by Tania at every step of the design process. Handmade with natural, renewable fibres, each luxurious rug is made to last generations.
