A complete refurbishment of a luxury family home full of existing heritage and character set within a conservation area.

This property in a conservation area of Wimbledon Village was transformed and extended, taking it from a traditional Arts and Crafts style cottage to a luxurious home, suited to present day living. Synthesising heritage charm with contemporary open plan spaces was key to the client’s design brief. Mokka Design meticulously planned to retain features of the original house and character, such as the leaded windows and a gable roof, whilst a modern aesthetic was introduced subtly and authentically.

In the kitchen, the expansive use of glass revolutionised this originally dark north facing space, with two skylights almost five metres across in length and three metre high steel doors. The scale of these glass elements not only solved the client’s stipulation for light but also brought a contemporary feel to the space, whilst the style of the crittall doors lend themselves to the essential heritage feel required.

Similar ‘contradictions’ can be seen with the choice of kitchen cabinetry; a timeless painted kitchen with simple but traditional mouldings is harmoniously partnered with the most contemporary of stone worktops. Handcrafted antique brass ironmongery is complemented by the strikingly simple but beautifully architectural pendant light feature over the island unit.

During the day, the light and proportions of the space are energising, with an inside/outside feel that connects the interior with the tropically landscaped garden beyond. In the evening when the garden is illuminated, the kitchen becomes a moody and inviting space for entertainment.

It is this brief, for an enduring design, full of light and an ideal space for entertainment, that directed this project as well as a pairing of design languages; the classic and the contemporary, where all elements celebrate artisanal craftsmanship and quality.
