Rigby & Rigby’s brief was to create a unique identity and expression for the private family office at Tjuvholmen, Oslo, Norway by incorporating the company values along with the family history into its design. This resulted in an office aesthetic that is intrinsically associated with the company.

The designers remodelled the entrance area with a new facade and full fit out. A focal point here is the custom staircase inspired by the hull of a boat, thus picking up on the client’s heritage in the maritime industry. Other key features to note is the custom signage and entrance control, digital screen, bespoke fitted furniture and company branding with sculptural reception desk. The four structural columns contained internally within the office are representative of the concept of the companies Four Pillars. These four pillars demonstrate the four generations of the family, the four members or the current generation and key company values. Each column is partially clad in a material that has been chosen to represent the core value the column stands for.

There were multiple bespoke commissions including two custom side tables hand carved from blocks of Italian Arabescato marble. The design is inspired by the same careful sculpting found on the stair and ceiling, the rear side of the table has three rebated stripes to reiterate the connection to the nearby bar stools and company logo.

Rigby & Rigby have taken the clients vision creating an office space that reflects the innovative and forward-thinking mindset of its occupiers. The client is a family business whose foundations are set within the maritime industry. This heritage, alongside the building waterside location, have fuelled a design that pays homage to the water and the Norwegian shipping industry through form and materiality.

The design also celebrates and represents the business’ diversification into technology that has been driven by a shift within the business from the third to fourth generation. The generational shift is represented as you travel through the office; past, present and future.
