Located on a hilltop in a small city south of Oslo, Norway, is a private residence that offers a breathtaking view of the Oslo fjord and the horizon. The project, conceptualized by the Tandberg Miller Design (TMD) team, is centered around designing a home for a former drag racer who had competed in the sport for many years. The trophies displayed in the custom-built cabinet are all from the client’s early drag racing days, and thus, it was one of the major challenges to create a cabinet that expresses the rawness of the sport itself.

To address this challenge, the TMD team decided to have the cabinet custom-built by a local blacksmith in a hot rolled steel and mesh finish, along with the staircase and handrail, which are also custom-built in the same two finishes. The blue color of both the hot rolled steel and the nearby ocean made the choice of color scheme a given one. The interior of the villa aims to showcase the beautiful Pine trees surrounding the property and the ocean, and thus, wood was combined with hot rolled steel to create a peaceful harmony in this home. The team also used a calming dark blue color on the rest of the interior to further enhance this sense of harmony.

The majority of the interior was designed by TMD, except for the kitchen and the sofa, which were reupholstered in a beautiful dark blue velvet. The dining table, made by Andrew Martin, features a steel base for an industrial look, while the tabletop is made of driftwood. Two sets of curtains are in the dining room, one made of mesh and the other of silk, to bring together the hardness of the mesh details with the softness of silk.

The trophy shelf, lamp above the dining table, wood used in the floors, and bookshelf in the living room all feature a thin red line to highlight the rawness of materials used and to create a sense of coherence throughout the interior. All the paintings in the residence are custom-made by a young Norwegian artist, depicting racing car drivers and life in the ocean to pay tribute to the owner and the surroundings.

In summary, Tandberg Miller Design successfully created a stunning residence for a former drag racer by incorporating raw materials and creating a cohesive interior design that showcases the surrounding beauty of the Pine trees and the ocean.
