Garnett Architecture LLP designed the meticulous refurbishment of a distinguished Grade II Listed private residence in the heart of central London. This stately abode, spanning an expansive 650 square meters and dating back to the 1860s, was thoughtfully revitalised, with a keen focus on preserving its original period features. The six-story structure, complemented by a linked rear mews, received a comprehensive makeover, encompassing the restoration of authentic elements that define its historical significance.

The scope of the project extended to a bespoke fit-out tailored to the client’s preferences, featuring extensive new joinery, refined lighting, and impeccably curated high-quality finishes. Notably, the master bedroom emerged as a versatile space, enhanced by Rimadesio sliding doors that seamlessly divide it into a master suite and guest room. The entrance hall exudes a sense of grandeur, thanks to the interplay of designer lighting, mosaic flooring, and custom-crafted joinery, complemented by the existing lofty ceilings and a generously proportioned staircase.

During the construction process, a remarkable discovery was made in the children’s bedroom—a series of arches in the ceiling. These architectural treasures were left exposed and adorned in a pristine white hue to harmonise with the interior design scheme. This thoughtful restoration choice not only paid homage to the building’s original form but also encapsulated a deep respect for its heritage.

Each space within the residence was meticulously designed to align with its intended function. The ground floor boasted expansive, open communal areas, creating a striking contrast with the lower level’s more intimate, compartmentalised private zones. The children’s bedrooms were cleverly connected by an elevated walkway, affording them a designated, light-filled sanctuary. To maximise natural light, the primary living spaces were strategically situated on the ground and lower ground floors, with large windows facing a lightwell and luminous finishes that diffused light throughout the home.

The result is a harmonious blend of simplicity, elegance, and opulence, interwoven with elements of playfulness, imbuing the residence with a distinct sense of character. Garnett Architecture LLP’s vision seamlessly marries the old and the new, paying a gracious tribute to the property’s rich heritage while ushering it gracefully into the 21st century. This internal renovation project meticulously preserved the iconic essence of the street, with many historic features either retained or artfully replicated to honour the past.
