Shane Nicholas Design has unveiled “Obsidian,” a strikingly luxurious home bar that masterfully balances dark ambiance with inviting warmth. Located in a historic annex of a WWII-era home, the project transforms what was once a utilitarian space for servants into an elegant, multi-functional retreat that honours its rich history while embracing modern luxury.

The client envisioned a space that would serve as both a relaxation haven and an entertainment hub. At the heart of the design is the bespoke bar, where Shane Nicholas Design has delivered a truly exceptional space. A standout feature is the black onyx worktop, which the designer had held onto for nearly a year, awaiting the perfect project. Illuminated crystallised pockets in the onyx create a mesmerizing glow, elevating the bar to a work of art and establishing a timeless, luxurious ambiance.

The annex now includes a spa-inspired wellness area with a steam room, sauna, and wet room, providing both practical amenities and a serene escape. The wet room’s dual function ensures guest comfort while seamlessly integrating with the bar’s design. A two-way wood burner serves as a central statement piece, offering warmth and intimacy visible from every seat in the room. Together, these features create a harmonious blend of atmosphere and functionality.

Shane Nicholas Design has preserved the annex’s historical significance while reimagining it as a contemporary sanctuary. Once a WWII officers’ mess and servant quarters, the annex has evolved into a standout feature of the home. This transformation encapsulates the juxtaposition of history and modernity, offering a space that celebrates its storied past while redefining its purpose with elegance and refinement.
