Atelier Alwill has completed a full interior renovation of a penthouse apartment positioned near the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, transforming a dated residence into an elegant and atmospheric home overlooking the city toward the Blue Mountains. The project by Atelier Alwill involved a complete internal replanning and refinishing across two levels, reimagining the apartment for a client who visits from London only a few times each year.

Originally defined by early 1990s interiors, heavy bulkheads and inefficient kitchen planning, the apartment required a complete reset. Atelier Alwill stripped the space back almost entirely, retaining only the window frames and existing bathrooms before introducing a new spatial layout designed for both entertaining and everyday comfort. The brief asked Atelier Alwill to create an environment that could function like a refined hotel while still feeling personal and inviting.

The redesigned entrance establishes the tone of the project. Visitors arrive at a stair with timber treads and waxed plaster finishes that rise toward a dramatic double height void and chandelier. The first level accommodates the main living areas including the kitchen, dining space and lounge. Here, Atelier Alwill integrated concealed features such as a screen hidden behind silver Japanese panels that allows the elegant entertaining lounge to transform into a private cinema.

The upper floor houses the main bedroom suite with a walk in wardrobe finished in walnut and solid oak. Atelier Alwill also introduced a study, a wine room and additional bathrooms, each designed with rich materials including tweed like wallpaper, velvet, leather and silk. Solid oak parquetry floors and statement lighting from the 1930s and 1940s reinforce the apartment’s refined character.

Through layered textures and carefully controlled lighting, Atelier Alwill created a moody yet welcoming penthouse that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.
