Project Name: Eaton Place

Location: Belgravia, London

Date Completed: September 2017

Interior Designer: Shalini Misra

Construction Company: Silver Interiors

The clients were a family of four, including two sons at university. The family, based in the US, wanted this apartment to be a home away from home used as a luxury pied-a-terre when in London. The design brief given to Shalini Misra stated that this property needed to be an easy, fluid space with a comfortable and luxurious area to entertain. Each bedroom needed to have an en-suite bathroom. This was difficult to achieve as the layout was limiting, however even the smallest bedroom has an en-suite shower room giving each member of the family privacy and independence. The bathrooms all have marble to continue the luxe materials of the apartment.

Most of the apartment is Grade II listed which restricted some design aspects in some regards and enhanced it in others such as the period architectural features. Shalini Misra were unable to add downlights in certain areas but had more freedom with lighting in the walls so they could have wall lights and add LED cables to the joinery which provide lower level lighting and mood lighting. Shalini Misra introduced layers of lighting where possible to create different moods and atmospheres from low to bright lighting, peripheral and central, and lighting to highlight art and objects.

The apartment is a mix of spacious rooms and smaller rooms and through the clever joinery design. Shalini Misra have made much more out of the space than meets the eye. The master bathroom has a door which is part of the cupboards but leads to the en-suite bathroom. Storage has been enhanced by making use of the high ceilings and adding niches for TVs and seating. The finishes on the joinery stand out as the designers mixed fabric, wood veneers, faux shagreen and paintwork all creating beautiful colour and texture combinations.

Shalini Misra’s favourite aspects of this project include the original architectural features, such as the cornices and ceiling plaster work, the stitched leather handrail on the staircase, the joinery, and the stunning chandeliers by Ungaro. Overall, it is a very usable space with beautiful furniture, lighting and finishes which suits the clients’ London lifestyle perfectly. This project is particularly special as it is in a beautiful historic area of London with unique period features. Shalini Misra’s combination of contemporary design and technology sits fluidly with these features creating a design that references the past whilst sitting firmly in the present with great style and elegance.
