Project Name: Coastal Cottage

Location: North Wales, United Kingdom

Date Completed: November 2018

Interior Designer: Lewis Knox

Architect: Dobson Owen

Construction Company: Henry Jones

With spectacular coastal and countryside views, this cottage was set to be a dream beach home in Wales for the clients. The brief given to Lewis Knox was clear. Design a beach house with plenty of wow factor – think understated yet cool. Somewhere to switch off from the world, relax and unwind with family, friends and, of course, the dogs too.

Firstly, Lewis Knox remodelled the cottage, extending it to suit the client’s need for a large space. Each bedroom was reconfigured to become more spacious, and furniture was chosen to look simple yet effective, using a mix of metal and timber to be robust and hard-wearing. Plus, loose linen covers over chairs and sofas helps to accommodate the dogs. The result was a charming place, filled with unique character, and ideal for entertaining lots of guests with ease.

The key aspect of this project for Lewis Knox was the natural material palette, which was all locally sourced and links back to the Welsh coast with local stone sourced, timbers from local Welsh chapels and Welsh slate. The natural interior blends into the landscape effortlessly.

Traditional skilled trades were involved with the stone walling to the exterior of the property which helps give the house its charming facade and integrates perfectly into the surrounding countryside. Polished plaster was used extensively throughout, and local joiners made traditional doors and joinery.

Lewis Knox believe that this project was so successful because it fulfils the brief with lots of bedrooms squeezed into the interior in a fun yet practical way. Hardwearing finishes installed with a playful mix of materials that link back to their coastal surroundings.
