With the understanding that design, colour, and lighting all have tremendous ability to impact our moods and everyday life, Hali MacDonald Interiors holds the belief that having a comforting and beautiful home to call your own is of utmost importance. The goal for Burgundy Project was to create comfort and approachability whilst retaining a layered and collected interior design.

Throughout the build and design process Hali remained aware of the impact on the environment as well as the impact that different selected products would have when living in the home. Products were locally sourced possible and chose materials and fabrics that had minimal off-gassing. When designing the exterior Hali MacDonald Interiors wanted the house to blend in seamlessly with the tree lined neighbourhood that sits along Lake Ontario whilst offering privacy to her outdoor dining and pool area. The colours and materials of the exterior allow it to sit well in it’s surroundings – if you’re not looking for the home it can easily be missed hiding behind the canopies of two large maple trees. It was critical to Hali to preserve these beautiful trees, choosing a special permeable paver for the water to penetrate to the roots.

Hali MacDonald Interiors has a strong appreciation for antiques and wanted this property to feel as if it had been there for quite some time. She wanted to recreate the warmth that you get from much older homes – the finished product gives an old world feel with modern day practicality. The home is filled with earthy tones, and the materials that were sourced such as stone, cedar, copper, and brick were chosen for how well they age. Talented artisans were used throughout the home, including carpenters that worked on creating the architectural staircase, and a talented metal smith that fabricated the custom blackened steel and brass range hood, plaster crown moldings and vent covers with impeccable attention to detail.

Mixing new pieces with antiques, traditional with modern, bright whites with colours, pattern and texture – the aim for this design was never to be an ostentatious, but rather one with casual elegance and beauty in the details. Hali MacDonald Interiors’ blending of styles and personalities throughout the house work in a way that complements each other without feeling overbearing. As a lover of the outdoors, Hali MacDonald Interiors draws a lot of inspiration from nature and elements in their natural state, and believes that the natural patina that develops over time is something should be celebrated; adding depth and interest to spaces that it is used within. The living areas of this family home were designed to be timeless. They are comfortable and functional for the family but also welcoming to the guests.
