Rowlands Associates have designed a 3500 ft ski Chalet, just minutes away from some of the world’s best skiing and Apres Ski in Whistler BC Canada. Their design was intentionally simple, a backdrop rather than the lead in such an awe-inspiring location.

The brief was to prepare drawings for a 3500 sq ft. ski chalet for the clients and their growing family. It was to be a place to gather and enjoy each other’s company, and share incredible skiing and hiking experiences in the amazing beauty of the surrounding natural terrain. It is a home that sits beautifully in it’s environment, modern but not stark. Careful attention was paid to all details and proportions of the property to create a great open feeling in the space, as well as fully utilising the budget and providing value for the investment made.

The home was constructed on a sloping lot and oriented towards incredible mountain views. The front entry and staircase became Rowlands Associates’ favourite areas of the home, with the stair details meant to draw you upstairs, and the view of the fireplace and mountains beyond that welcomes visitors. Living spaces and the master suite are situated on the second floor. A Gyrofocus suspended fireplace anchors the living area, maintaining the feeling of lightness and wellbeing that the home was designed to impart. Guest bedrooms, exercise, and laundry areas are on the main floor with a secondary family room as a hub for gathering. A roof top garage and two decks provide outdoor amenity space, and an elevator makes second floor living convenient and easy.

Rowlands Associates’ design of the home is simple in form and material choices, honouring the Nordic influences preferred by their clients, and intended to become a backdrop for the family and the surrounding natural beauty. Materials were chosen for visual appeal and lasting durability. Kitchen cabinets feature anti-microbial laminate door and drawer fronts, and porcelain countertops. The home is incredibly well-built and insulated, going well beyond code requirements and well suited to its snowy environment.
