ZED Studio Inc. has created a truly one-of-a-kind home that reflects the client’s worldly experiences while drawing inspiration from a sundial design. ZED Studio Inc. skilfully balanced architectural expression, materials, and functionality to produce a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing space. Through effective collaboration with the clients, the final product is a personalised and understated home that not only meets their needs but surpasses their expectations.

The home’s design is inspired by a sundial, with a shard and circle design anchor that reflects the play of light throughout the day, creating an artistic and inviting atmosphere. Relational design plays a key role in the project’s success, as each room is inspired by a functional art piece, such as lighting installations, custom mosaic tiles, and bespoke slabs of stone, reflecting the clients’ appreciation for the arts.

One of the most striking design features of the home is the large room-dividing peninsula fireplace that is integrated into the sundial shard design. It not only serves as a functional room divider but also welcomes guests as they arrive, making it a striking centerpiece of the home. The focus of the design theory was to remove as many hallways as possible and use transitory spaces to flow with the clients’ requests for an entertaining home that also had formal spaces. By inviting in copious amounts of light through high sloped ceilings, the spaces are all well lived without the need for excessive lighting.

Almost every room opens onto the pool and generous outdoor living spaces, encouraging the inhabitants and guests to connect with nature through the built environment. The layout of the home feels small from the street, however as the home is traveled, it expands, revealing the inner workings of a masterpiece that was not expected when first discovered.

The home is built to higher standards and is energy-efficient, prepped for future solar power installations. The Bocci light functional art installation required skill and artisanship to play with the sloping ceiling. Extensive concrete workmanship was required for the texturing and stamping of a long driveway with the clients’ insignia. At the pool, a concrete diving rock was sculpted and serves as a functional art piece. Water flowing over stones adds to the serene feeling of the outdoor living space.
