The architectural firm KA DesignWorks crafted this residence for one of the few remaining lots in Basalt’s most sought-after neighborhood, a premier bedroom community of Aspen, Colorado.

This four-bedroom, two-story home, which includes a studio space/accessory dwelling unit, serves as a tranquil retreat for a busy professional family recently relocated to the area. Given the lot’s proximity to the highway, the architects aimed to optimize the interior living spaces by minimizing the typically underutilized backyard due to road noise.

The residence is positioned at the back setback line, creating an interior courtyard that enhances the great room by blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. A guest bedroom on the lower level also benefits from access to the courtyard and side yard.
The upper level features a bonus family room with access to the primary suite, which includes a spa-inspired bathroom, along with two additional bedrooms.

A storage vestibule separates the main living areas from a 45-square-meter accessory dwelling unit with a private entrance, currently utilized as a studio. The design thoughtfully incorporates limited views and allows abundant natural light into the space while ensuring privacy from both the front neighborhood street and the rear highway.
