Dunagan Design was tasked with transforming a dated 20,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style residence in Napa Valley into a modern, rustic haven for an esteemed American philanthropist and art collector. Set on a 40-acre wine vineyard, the homeowner sought to create a space that would not only showcase his extensive art collection but also provide an environment for large gatherings while maintaining an intimate feel. The home’s location, perched on the eastern hillside of Napa Valley, offers unparalleled mid-level views of the surrounding landscape, a feature the design team aimed to enhance.

Originally constructed in the late 1990s, the house was dark, with small rooms and a disjointed connection to the stunning views. Dunagan Design reimagined the architecture through a Napa Valley lens, blending rustic modern design with a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. The team focused on creating open spaces that maximize the natural light and highlight the breathtaking views from every room.

The design was driven by the homeowner’s desire to host events for 300 to 350 guests while still ensuring a cozy, personal atmosphere for his extended family. The use of steel, wood, and stone became central to the design, with each material applied uniquely throughout the home. A standout feature is the open-air arcade made from locally quarried Syar stone, leading to a striking glass-box foyer. Inside, a steel staircase with cantilevered wooden treads ascends alongside a glass wall that overlooks a tranquil reflecting pool. This project exemplifies the balance of grandeur and intimacy that Dunagan Design is known for, crafting a home that harmonizes with its Napa Valley surroundings.
