Shalini Misra Design has completed a private residential wellness sanctuary in Switzerland, transforming a challenging basement space into an immersive retreat dedicated to restoration, relaxation and wellbeing.

Conceived as a highly personalised spa environment, the project required Shalini Misra Design to overcome significant architectural constraints, including the absence of natural light and low ceiling heights. Rather than viewing these conditions as obstacles, Shalini Misra Design used them as opportunities to create a carefully controlled and highly atmospheric wellness experience tailored to the client’s needs.

The brief called for a sophisticated environment that could deliver the performance and functionality of a professional spa while maintaining the comfort and intimacy of a private residence. Shalini Misra Design developed a carefully considered layout that incorporates dedicated areas for arrival, consultation, beauty treatments, massage therapies, sauna experiences and shower facilities. Each space was arranged to ensure a seamless sense of flow and continuity throughout the suite.

Lighting became one of the defining elements of the project. In the absence of daylight, Shalini Misra Design introduced multiple layers of illumination to create depth, warmth and visual interest while supporting relaxation and circadian wellbeing. These lighting interventions work in harmony with a luxurious palette of materials including rose onyx, alabaster, rock crystal, mother of pearl, marble, timber, silk, bronze and brass, all selected for their tactile qualities and enduring elegance.

The project also showcases Shalini Misra Design’s commitment to craftsmanship and bespoke detailing. Collectible design pieces, artisan made furnishings, custom cabinetry and specialist stonework were integrated throughout the spa to create a cohesive and highly personalised environment.

One of the most striking features is the ceiling treatment. Shalini Misra Design collaborated on a bespoke hand sculpted floral plaster installation by Ippolita Romeo, with lighting integrated into each petal. Combined with reflective surfaces and recessed perimeter lighting, the feature draws the eye upward and transforms the low ceiling into a sculptural focal point.
