StudioTwenty Limited is leading the transformation of one of Derbyshire’s most iconic structures, the Grade II* listed Riber Castle in Matlock. Set high above the Derwent Valley, the Victorian Gothic landmark has long captured the imagination of locals and visitors, yet decades of disuse left much of the building in a derelict state. Originally built in 1862 by John Smedley as a private residence, the castle later housed a boys’ school and eventually a wildlife park, its varied history adding layers of character but also contributing to its deterioration.

StudioTwenty Limited has undertaken the challenge of restoring the castle with a dual ambition: to preserve its historic fabric and to reimagine the interior as a collection of twenty six refined and contemporary apartments. Each residence has been designed to retain the architectural charm of the original structure while offering modern comfort and thoughtful spatial planning. Shared common areas and landscaped gardens will complement the private homes, creating an environment that feels both communal and deeply connected to the castle’s dramatic setting.

The project balances heritage conservation with a commitment to luxury living, resulting in a residential offering that is entirely unique within the Peak District. StudioTwenty Limited views the restoration as a privilege, recognising the responsibility of reviving a landmark that holds cultural and historical significance for the region. The team’s approach is rooted in respect for the castle’s narrative, ensuring its story is protected while preparing it for future generations to enjoy.

Through meticulous restoration and sensitive design, StudioTwenty Limited is breathing new life into Riber Castle, allowing the building to stand once again as a symbol of architectural beauty, craftsmanship and timeless heritage.
