KA DesignWorks has completed The Still, a mountainside residence in Mountain Village at Telluride Ski Resort that has been carefully designed to embrace its dramatic alpine setting while providing a tranquil retreat for family life and relaxation.

Positioned on a steep ski access site, the home responds directly to the challenges and opportunities of the surrounding landscape. KA DesignWorks conceived the residence as a place for connection, reflection and immersion in nature, ensuring every aspect of the architecture strengthens the relationship between the home and the San Sophia Range.

Rather than competing with its remarkable surroundings, KA DesignWorks anchored the residence into the mountainside using substantial stone retaining walls and a restrained composition of gabled roof forms. A carefully selected palette of wood, stone, steel and glass reinforces the home’s connection to the alpine environment while creating warmth, texture and a lasting sense of permanence.

A defining feature of the project is the carefully choreographed arrival sequence. Visitors enter beneath a lower roofline before progressing into a dramatic vaulted great room where expansive glazing reveals panoramic northern views across the mountains. KA DesignWorks designed this progression to create a memorable sense of discovery, transforming the landscape into an integral part of the architectural experience rather than simply a backdrop.

The great room forms the social heart of the residence, combining living, dining and kitchen spaces within an open volume that extends onto outdoor terraces. A sculptural staircase provides a striking focal point while linking these gathering areas with guest accommodation, entertainment spaces and wellness facilities on the lower level.

Throughout the project, KA DesignWorks ensured the organisation of the home balanced generous communal spaces with quieter areas for privacy and retreat. The stepped massing follows the natural slope of the site, reducing the building’s visual impact while allowing each room to benefit from abundant daylight and uninterrupted mountain views.
