Designed by Diona Polito Design for a family with a decades long connection to Hawaii, the residence reflects a lifestyle centred on gathering, cultural heritage and relaxed island living.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
The 4,000 square foot home with five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms was created after the family outgrew their previous condominium and sought a property that could support their expanding multigenerational lifestyle. Remaining in Keauhou was essential due to its historic and cultural significance as the birthplace of Kamehameha III. For the clients, building a home in the area symbolised a new chapter for the family.
Diona Polito Design developed a custom residence that celebrates the spirit of old Hawaii while embracing contemporary comfort. Vintage aloha influences appear throughout the interiors in the form of retro inspired motifs, traditional barkcloth textiles, natural materials and vintage rattan furniture. A colour palette drawn from the island landscape including ocean blues, tropical greens, sandy neutrals and volcanic blacks reinforces a strong sense of place.
The layout was carefully planned by Diona Polito Design to support both connection and independence across three generations. Expansive open living spaces link the kitchen, dining areas, pool and spa, encouraging indoor outdoor living and making it easy for family members to cook, relax and spend time together. At the same time, private en suite bedrooms provide quiet retreats for couples and visiting grandchildren.
Furniture, lighting and decorative pieces were curated both on the mainland and locally, with items shipped to the island for installation alongside artwork by Hawaiian artists. Through thoughtful collaboration and attention to detail, Diona Polito Design has created a joyful yet calming retreat that honours family traditions while embracing the spirit of aloha.
