Yokobori Architect & Associates has completed a striking residential project in Tokyo that merges art, tradition, and architectural innovation into a unified living space. Titled “AR-BSTRAC-T”, the residence is conceived as a living work of abstract art, reflecting the personalities and inner worlds of its occupants. Yokobori Architect & Associates approached the design with the belief that art is not only an aesthetic feature but also a deeply personal and spiritual expression.

Drawing inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of Ichigo-Ichie, a once in a lifetime encounter, the project defines art broadly, from curated pieces to found objects and childhood drawings. Every detail, from layout to material, is composed like an abstract painting. The home features art display spaces not as add ons but as integral parts of the architecture, created by shifting wall depths and forms. This design method embodies the Japanese principles of Ma and Yohaku, embracing the beauty of emptiness and the significance of space.

Yokobori Architect & Associates incorporated a circular floor plan that reflects nature’s continuity. Materials such as wood, earth, and stone were selected for their tactile connection to the natural world, with handcrafted finishes adding depth and temporal character. The interior palette features a single tone of light earth colour, brought to life by subtle shifts in light and shadow. Accents of aged copper and natural wallpapers lend richness to the design, while an original handwoven rug by Solstys anchors the living space with symbolism and texture.

Located in a Tokyo district known for art and culture, the residence resonates with its surroundings. Yokobori Architect & Associates has created a home that is not merely a shelter but a transformative environment,where the boundary between art, architecture, and daily life disappears.
