EPR Architects

EPR Architects has completed the hotel interior architecture for Six Senses London at The Whiteley, marking the luxury lifestyle brand’s first venture into the UK and its first urban hotel in the Northern Hemisphere. Located within the transformation of the former Whiteley Department Store, the project forms part of Foster + Partners’ wider £1.5 billion redevelopment of the landmark building in Queensway.

Working within Foster + Partners’ established architectural vision, EPR Architects was tasked with creating an intuitive layout that would optimise the Grade II listed building for Six Senses while embedding the brand’s wellness focused philosophy throughout the guest experience. Following early collaboration with developer Valouran and operator Six Senses, EPR Architects developed a design strategy that successfully translated the brand’s resort model into a contemporary urban hospitality setting.

The hotel comprises 109 guest rooms and suites, including the Whiteley Suite with its distinctive 125 square metre roof terrace, alongside 14 branded residences. Luxury amenities include a ground floor lobby, lounge bar, restaurant and a 2,300 square metre spa featuring a 20 metre indoor swimming pool. The development also introduces the world’s first Six Senses Place, a social and wellness members club designed to encourage meaningful connection and restorative experiences.

A defining feature of the project is the arrival sequence, centred around the grand cascading staircase from the original Whiteley Department Store. Carefully deconstructed, extended and repositioned by EPR Architects, the staircase now serves as the focal point of the hotel, connecting public spaces while celebrating the building’s heritage. The experience is further enhanced by dramatic lightwells, towering petrified eucalyptus trees and layered views through the building, creating an immediate connection to the wellness facilities below.

Throughout the interiors, implemented by EPR Architects from designs by AvroKO, references to the building’s history are combined with natural materials, extensive planting, bespoke furnishings and contemporary detailing. The result is a distinctive destination that balances heritage, wellness and modern luxury, bringing an immersive resort experience into the heart of London while contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Queensway.
