Fay Interior Living was commissioned to transform the basement kitchen of this period property into a refined, light-filled space that carefully balances the home’s historic character with the demands of contemporary living. The design vision centred on creating a serene and timeless interior, where traditional architectural features are celebrated alongside discreet modern interventions.

Respecting the original proportions and fabric of the property was fundamental to the scheme. Existing period details were preserved wherever possible, while contemporary elements, including clean-lined fittings, understated hardware and integrated technology, were introduced with restraint to complement rather than compete with the home’s heritage.

A key priority was maximising natural light throughout the basement. Carefully considered glazing, elegant window treatments and reflective finishes work together to enhance daylight, creating a bright and airy atmosphere without compromising privacy. Bespoke joinery was designed to appear freestanding, maintaining the room’s sense of scale while incorporating generous concealed storage that keeps the space uncluttered and highly functional.

The kitchen flows effortlessly into a tranquil living area, designed to encourage both relaxation and entertaining. A restrained palette of natural timber, polished marble and soft neutral tones introduces warmth, tactility and an enduring sense of calm, while layered lighting allows the ambience to adapt throughout the day.

The success of the design lies in its thoughtful detailing. Tall joinery draws the eye upwards, enhancing the perception of height, while a ceiling light reminiscent of a rooflight and discreet integrated illumination brighten the interior. Double doors frame garden views and improve circulation, reinforcing the connection between inside and out. The result is an elegant, cohesive home that harmoniously combines period charm with contemporary comfort, delivering a practical, timeless environment designed for longevity and modern family living.
