Foster + Partners presents Nujuma as an exclusive luxury resort on the Red Sea coast, envisioned as a new destination for global tourists. The project forms part of a wider masterplan for a special enterprise zone, which includes several inland developments and an airport that will serve island resorts across the region. The resort is located near the edge of the Al Wajh lagoon, positioned to the northwest of the hub island, and is accessible by boat or seaplane.

The design centres on an exceptionally picturesque expanse of crystalline sea known as the Blue Hole, recognised for its striking hues. A circular ring of over-water villas is arranged like a jewel in a necklace, connecting to two linear islands on either side. Alongside these villas, the island accommodates exclusive beach villas and a range of amenities including a beach club, a spa and restaurants.

Foster + Partners adopts a light touch approach, ensuring that the low density structures sit carefully within the natural landscape. The villas are conceived as a kit of parts, manufactured offsite to minimise disruption during construction. Built from prefabricated and sustainable timber, and finished with rope cladding, the architecture is intended to blend visually with the surrounding environment.
