Garuda Design has completed the transformation of The Marcus Tapestry Collection Hotel in Portrush, breathing new life into one of the town’s most recognisable Victorian landmarks while creating a boutique destination inspired by exploration, imagination and local storytelling. Occupying the historic Londonderry Hotel building on Northern Ireland’s dramatic North Atlantic coastline, the new 80 bedroom hotel celebrates the property’s rich heritage while delivering a contemporary hospitality experience.

Tasked with restoring the building’s original character, Garuda Design looked beyond a traditional coastal aesthetic, instead drawing inspiration from Portrush’s maritime history, Victorian architecture and local culture. Existing architectural features were carefully preserved and enhanced, allowing the building’s historic identity to remain central while introducing refined contemporary comfort throughout.

The refurbishment includes guest bedrooms, reception, lounge, bar and restaurant spaces, creating a seamless journey from arrival to departure. Bespoke artwork and commissioned wall graphics tell stories of the coastline, local landmarks and seafaring heritage, encouraging guests to discover something new as they move through the hotel. Rich timber detailing, handcrafted joinery, layered lighting and tactile materials combine with a carefully balanced palette to create interiors that feel welcoming, authentic and timeless.
