Gunter & Co

Gunter & Co has transformed a Grade II listed apartment in central London into a richly layered family home, replacing a developer specification interior with a design that balances period character, practicality and contemporary living. The project centred on reconfiguring the apartment to maximise its relationship with the surrounding park views while creating spaces that feel personal, welcoming and connected to daily family life.

The clients approached Gunter & Co with a clear vision for a home that would feel lived in rather than overly polished. The brief called for interiors capable of accommodating contemporary art, treasured personal objects and the realities of modern family living, while also respecting the architectural heritage of the apartment. Existing features that complemented the building’s period character were carefully retained, while unsympathetic details were removed and replaced with more considered interventions.

A major achievement of the scheme was the reworking of the apartment’s layout to ensure the surrounding parkland could be experienced from every entertaining space. Gunter & Co opened up walls throughout the property, allowing natural light and greenery to flow through the interiors. Soft green Crittall elements were introduced to echo the tones of the treetops outside, subtly reinforcing the connection between the home and its setting.

At the heart of the apartment sits a bespoke kitchen island that demonstrates Gunter & Co’s attention to detail and craftsmanship. Designed to appear as a single sculptural piece, the island combines a variety of materials, including a stainless steel worktop chosen for its practicality in a busy family kitchen. Specialist painter Henry van der Vijver was commissioned to hand paint plug sockets so they disappear seamlessly into the marble splashback.

Throughout the apartment, Gunter & Co layered fabrics, wallpapers and bespoke joinery in tones that complement the clients’ art collection. Vintage furniture and carefully selected lighting introduce warmth and personality, creating interiors that feel sophisticated, feminine and deeply connected to the lives of the family who inhabit them.
