Gunter & Co has completed the sensitive transformation of a historic Arts and Crafts home in the Surrey Hills, reimagining the property for contemporary family life while preserving its rich creative heritage. The project was guided by the clients’ strong connection to nature and their desire to feel immersed in the surrounding landscape from every room, alongside a commitment to celebrating an important personal art collection linked to the home’s history.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
Gunter & Co approached the redesign with a focus on retaining original features, including a remarkable 17 metre deep well in the snug and a restored vintage bell pull system, ensuring the house remains rooted in its past while functioning effortlessly for modern living. Throughout the interiors, colours and materials echo the natural setting, with greens, rust tones and soft blues complemented by botanical fabrics and wallpapers that reference the nearby woodland.
A standout space within the project is the master bathroom, which Gunter & Co transformed from a previously underused dressing room into a cocooning retreat. The design centres on softness and immersion, with curved plasterwork enveloping the room and a gently arched ceiling enhancing its spa like atmosphere. Tadelakt walls create a seamless finish, while an oval shaped skylight above the vanity introduces natural light without disrupting the room’s fluid geometry.
Every detail was bespoke, from the warm timber flooring designed for comfort underfoot to the Calacatta Viola marble that introduces subtle richness. A carefully positioned window above the bath frames views of the landscape, reinforcing the connection to nature, while soft lighting and a discreet bistro blind complete the tranquil setting.
Through thoughtful craftsmanship and a deep respect for context, Gunter & Co has delivered a home that feels both timeless and intimately connected to its environment.
