Hawksbee’s waterfront residence in Poole is among the practice’s most rewarding projects to date and reflects the full breadth of its design approach. Appointed to deliver the complete lighting design across interior, façade and landscape, Hawksbee was able to shape the scheme holistically from the earliest stages. This rare level of involvement allowed lighting to respond to how the house sits within its coastal setting, while also considering how each internal space would be experienced throughout the day and evening.

The success of the project lies in its cohesive narrative. Rather than treating interior and exterior lighting separately, Hawksbee developed a continuous scheme that gently connects architecture, materials and the surrounding waterside environment. The result is a calm and unified atmosphere that feels seamless throughout the property.
Close collaboration with the architect, interior designer, client and wider delivery team was central to the outcome. By embedding lighting within the design process from concept through to completion, decisions were made with clarity and intent, producing a more resolved and refined result. The project also demonstrates Hawksbee’s commitment to detailed, joined-up thinking and careful control at every scale.
A key achievement is the sense of warmth and welcome created through carefully layered light. Soft ambient illumination ensures the home feels inviting rather than over-lit, both inside and out. This has resonated strongly with the client, who has spoken about looking forward to returning home and setting the scene each evening.
Within the coastal environment, Hawksbee adopted a restrained approach, selecting durable, high-quality fittings designed to age gracefully over time. Precision of placement was prioritised over quantity of fittings, allowing the landscape to remain present while creating a timeless scheme defined by balance, performance and quiet confidence.
