Project Name: Spedition Hotel & Restaurant

Location: Thun, Switzerland

Date completed: 2016

Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli

Spedition Hotel & Restaurant is a personal boutique hotel housed in a former logistics warehouse, which in turn is located in a post-industrial area of Thun currently going through a revival. The hotel is based on the contrast between the former transport hub – the shortest route from A to B, schedules, precision and efficiency – and the hotelier’s passion for enjoying life’s detours and all the adventures and pleasures they bring.

The old transport warehouse is a beautiful brick building located in a post-industrial part of town that is currently undergoing a revival, with new housing being built and new cultural activities, such as a new cinema. It is also right by the railway station (as befits a logistics hub). The owners, Credit Suisse, wanted a hotel that would not just provide more beds and hot meals but also contribute to the life of the entire area, buttressing the redevelopment. In other words, they wanted an experience, not just services. They also wanted something a little bit outside the norm of staid, proper Swiss hotels – something a little more individual and characterful. The restaurant was to be central – a legendary local restaurateur was lined up to run it – and there was to be a wine cellar and a terrace.

Stylt Trampoli’s favourite aspect of the project was the secret library on the blind landing, comprising a selection of very carefully hand-picked Parisian prints and gentlemen’s interest books… The design works because it is a seamless part of a carefully designed guest experience. Because it is based on a strong, strategic concept, it is meaningful as well as gorgeous, durable and commercially effective.
