The RoomMate Gorka Hotel in Spain designed by Cuarto Interior sits right on the edge of one of San Sebastián’s most charming corners, the Plaza de Gipuzkoa. One block from the Old Town, but comparatively quiet and restful at night, it’s the perfect spot to stay for a city break.

Hotel Gorka’s exterior is a classic building from the early 1900s, the interiors stay true to the Room Mate brand’s bold, contemporary design aesthetic. The Belle Epoque inspired the Art Deco touches throughout, from the lettering to the ironwork, and luxurious materials like velvet, leather, and shiny metals abound. Upstairs, the rooms trade the lobby’s splashy mustard, gold and turquoise tones for more subdued and peaceful greys and lilacs.

Each room thoughtfully designed by Cuarto Interior is achingly chic, with high ceilings that lend an automatic touch of old-school glamour. It’s not all style and no substance, though — the details are thankfully well thought out. Rooms have big wall-mounted televisions with USB, HDMI, and every other kind of plug and hook-up you can dream of. The lighting has two settings: vibey and extra-vibey. The bathrooms have marble fixtures and quirky toiletries, with rainfall showerheads. Twelve of the rooms look out onto the plaza, but the remainder have views onto an interior patio, meaning light and airiness for everyone.

The concept of the interior design follows the guidelines of a contemporary yet classic feel. Cuarto Interior kept in mind the architecture of the building as well as its location in San Sebastian, creating a concept that will be in tune with the city. The building consists of 6 floors above ground and two below ground level that add up to 1800m2, boasting 33 rooms and the 3 duplex rooms on the top floor. Although the building is new construction, it has maintained its old façade that is part of the whole of the Plaza de Guipúzcoa.
