The design scheme was to complement the property’s panoramic urban backdrop and takes cues from Chinese history and cultural traditions. The main reception, lobby lounge, bar and restaurants sitting at the top of the building in a triple height volume were to wrap the central core and provide a flow from one space to the next, and be combined to cater for peak hours overflow, so the grill within The Link restaurant is opened to The Archive.

The lobby lounge leads the guests to The Link – a signature Manhattan style bar resembling a tree trunk, beautifully sculpted out of polished brass, out of which symbolic paper is represented in an amazing cobalt blue and gold glass sculptural chandelier hovering in the double height ceiling above the bar.

The Conrad Hotel project represents a 3 year collaboration between the developer, the operator and the design teams, working with local and international suppliers and artisans to create a hotel of international stature, in a city in the north east of China. Whilst reflecting on local Chinese cultural elements and history such as the Manchu people,  the design also represents the fast growing pace and level of sophistication in these second tier Chinese cities.

The chandeliers by Lasvit and Sans Sousi were custom designed in collaboration with the suppliers and provide a signature feature in their spaces; the main reception lobby and the Link bar respectively.  The bar counter was cast in brass to resemble a tree trunk with the life contour lines carved into the top. The chandelier above looks like sheets of paper blowing from the tree and over the ceiling, in gold and cobalt blue hand blown glass.
