Club Quarters approached MAAPS Design and Architecture with the task of taking a series of unused, unloved basement storage spaces, and converting them into a series of guest rooms as a place of respite from the hustle and bustle of the hotel’s central London location. The design brief was to create a series of adaptive, executive interior room concepts for business use within the below ground space of Club Quarters Lincoln’s Inn Fields. They were tasked with developing refined, compact, and highly individual rooms, having a distinctly different feel from the rest of the rooms in the hotel, while maintaining a sense of unity with Club Quarters Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The aim was to offer the hotel’s core clients a unique and bespoke business guest room.

The most obvious challenge was that the rooms are windowless, which at first appeared to be an unwelcoming and unappealing characteristic. Yet working on a windowless room demanded that the designer paid close attention to crafting fine details and the quality of the interior design in order to create a serene space. Overall the room feels generous, calming and welcoming. The designers’ endeavoured to create a space that draws the viewer in, and makes you feel relaxed and at home.

The brief challenged MAAPS to be attentive, distilled, and resourceful. This is an instance where embracing the apparent limitations allowed them to hone on their design skills, find a point of empathy with the guests, and to gain beneficial insight into our own design and creative process.

The rooms achieve a high quality and refined residential feel. They are fully focused on the functional and technological needs of the business executive. Nothing is superflurous. The finesse and thoroughness of the design equate to the values associated within yacht and executive jet interiors. The scheme is a serious piece of hotel design expertise and an exploration of how to imaginatively utilise unproductive space.

The design incorporated a colour palette inspired by the surrounding London area. All of which are calm, neutral, and coordinated colours, that dispel any sense of claustrophobia. The project embraces many novel and attentively detailed elements.  The rooms provide a focused and dedicated room experience for the business travellers.
